This stage of pregnancy is often filled with excitement and eager anticipation for the expectant mother and her loved ones. Two frequently asked questions during this time are: when can a baby’s gender first be determined, and how long does it typically take to identify gender during an ultrasound?
In most cases, gender can be identified as early as 15 weeks into the pregnancy, and often with a high degree of clarity. The time it takes to determine gender during an ultrasound depends largely on the baby's position. In many cases, gender can be identified within just a few minutes. However, we don’t stop there. To ensure accuracy, we continue scanning from multiple angles to confirm our findings before completing the session.
What to expect during your gender determination visit.
From the moment you arrive, our welcoming front desk team will greet you warmly, helping you feel at ease. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and a few nerves—we’re here to make sure your experience is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
When it’s time for your scan, you’ll be guided to a cozy, thoughtfully designed room created with your comfort in mind. The space includes plush seating and sofas to accommodate family and friends who want to share in this special moment with you. We also encourage siblings to join, making it a truly memorable experience for the whole family. Your baby’s ultrasound will be displayed on a large screen, allowing everyone in the room to enjoy the joy of seeing your baby together.
To begin the session, we’ll start with a 2D scan—even if you’re booked for a 4D or HD ultrasound. This is standard practice, as gender determination is most accurate in 2D, and it also lays the foundation for capturing detailed 4D or HD images. Depending on your baby’s position, we may begin with gender identification or start by listening to the heartbeat.
If the gender is determined during your session, we’ll announce it and show it on the screen—unless you prefer to keep it a surprise for a later gender reveal. In that case, we’ll temporarily turn off the screen while we determine the gender, then carefully seal any revealing images in an envelope for your special reveal. Once that’s done, the screen will be turned back on so you can continue watching your baby move, stretch, or even give a little wave.
